Traditional pan-fried hamburger steak is taken out to the grill in this Hamburger Steaks and Onions recipe. A delicious comfort dish that has been around for years, these hamburger steaks are made with ground beef that's combined with seasonings including onion powder, chili powder, oregano, salt, and pepper, and then grilled. The onions are made on the stove with a mixture of beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, red wine, and seasonings.

This recipe is a great way to dress up burger meat into something more extravagant than hamburgers, and have a meal the entire family will love to have on their plates.

Serve it with french fries, mashed potatoes and green beans, or your favorite sides.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steak:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

  • 2 tablespoons sea salt flakes

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

For the Onions:

  • 2 large onions, cut into 1/2-inch rounds

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1 dash coarsely ground black pepper

  • 1/2 cup beef stock

  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 teaspoons red cooking wine

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

Steps to Make It

Make the Onions:

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. To prepare the onion, heat oil in a large skillet and add onions, salt, and black pepper, cook for 3 minutes on high heat.

  3. Watch carefully, so onions do not burn.

  4. Add remaining ingredients—beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, wine, and chili pepper, and bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium and allow the sauce to simmer for 8 minutes.

  5. Add more broth if necessary.

  6. Once onions are soft and translucent, remove pan from heat and set aside.

Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Preheat the grill for medium-high heat.

  3. Combine ground beef with seasonings—salt, onion powder, chili powder, oregano, and black pepper, and form into 4 to 5 equal-sized, oblong-shaped patties.

  4. Place onto grill and cook for 7 to 8 minutes per side.

  5. Once the internal temperature at the thickest part of the patty reaches 160 F/72 C, remove from heat, top with the onions, and serve.

Tips

  • For moist, full of flavor meat, select ground chuck with 15 to 20 percent fat in it.
  • Check the patties with an instant-read thermometer to ensure the meat is cooked to the minimum safe temperature of 160 F.

Recipe Variation

  • Add some mushrooms to the onions.
