Bradley Smokers produces a good electric smoker that has some very well thought out features. From the outside this small smoker looks like a mini refrigerator. Inside is a reservoir of water just below a heating element. Wood biscuits are feed in through a feeder on the outside. The wood gets burned by the heating element to create smoke. After 20 minutes the biscuit falls into the water reservoir to be put out and a new biscuit falls into place. This way you dont get the bitter smoke that can occur from burning wood to ash. And the great thing is, its all automatic. If you dont want to sit by the smoker, with this unit you dont have to. The Bradley smoker sells for around $400.
New Braunfels Smoker Company has been purchased by Char-Broil giving them access to Char-Broil's distribution network. If you've been snooping around the grill section of your local hardware store you might have seen the Hondo Smoker, or similar models. Smokers like this are also showing up on several cooking shows as more and more chefs explore the world of real barbecue. The Hondo smoker, like in this class is a horizontal barrel smoker with offset firebox and smoke stack. It can be used for grilling as well as smoking and with its large capacity you can smoke a lot of food if you're interested. The New Braunfels Hondo Smoker sells for around $200, but I've seen it on sale for a lot less. Do some careful shopping and you can get a lot of smoker for the money.
