Gas Grills in this price range should be powerful, have good features, and quality construction. This doesn't mean complete stainless steel construction, but it does mean durable construction. Look for brand names and be prepared to look beyond the big box stores. The best place to find these gas grills is at a local Barbecue Products Specialty Store.
1. Saber SS 500 3-Burner
Take a decade of experience and spend two years designing the better gas grill. This is what happened when people from Char-Broil were asked by the parent company to start something new. This Saber grill retailers (at specialty retailers) for $1,400USD. Made with 304 stainless steel and an efficient and unique infrared cooking system make this not only a durable grill, but one that is easy to use. The attention to detail is high and the the quality of the materials is very good for the price range. This is a simple gas grill that is simple to use.
2. Broil King Imperial 490
The newly designed Broil King Imperial 90 Gas Grill is a big change for Broil King. Stepping away from the cast aluminum body, this grill is a combination of stainless steel, steel sheet metal and cast aluminum hood caps. This makes for a large, powerful grill that still has all the great cooking technology that makes Broil King one of the best grills on the market. The 4 dual tube burners give you a high, even heat and the linear flow control values let you produce precise temperatures. This grill also features a full rotisserie system and a side burner so you get all the features you need.
3. Weber Summit S-420 Gas Grill
This is possibly the best of the "mass market" grills on the market. To get more quality and appearance in a grill you'll end up spending a lot more money. However, at $1,500USD for a basic model you can find grills that cook just as well for less. Of course, they wouldn't be a Weber and won't have this kind of quality or durability. Weber provides an excellent warranty and support, so you'll get a good 10 years out of this grill one way or the other. I would like a few more BTUs but Weber design makes the most out of the heat this unit puts out.
4. Napoleon Prestige P500RSIB
This is a powerful grill that delivers up to 48,000 BTUs under it's 500 square inch primary cooking area. This gives you the ability to sear and grill at high temperatures. The ability to lower the output to just 6,000 BTUs gives you a lot of versatility with this grill. The high quality of the internal components means it will last and perform for a long time. This grill comes with a 12,500 BTU infrared side burner and 19,000 BTU rear mounted infrared rotisserie burner and full rotisserie kit.
5. Broilmaster P3S Super Premium Gas Grill
Long ago gas grills were made with cast aluminum bodies and quality, durable parts. Those grills, mostly gone now, where built to last for decades. They may not have been stylish or loaded with features but they cooked well and many are still around today. Broilmaster grills are amongst the few of these kinds of grills still in business. This grill, the top of the Broilmaster line is unique and built like a tank. This model has a unique shutter system that lets you switch from direct to indirect grilling with the flip of a lever. The cast stainless cooking grates can be set to three positions for temperature control.
6. American Outdoor Grill 24 inch
This gas grill was designed to be an affordable (around $1,900USD) completely 304 stainless steel grill with all the features. It isn't fancy and it might seem like its that affordable, but this grill is what you get when no short cuts are taken. Designed and built by the same people who make Firemagic gas grills, this is a great grill for the person serious about cooking and who wants to have it all in a package that will last for many years.
7. The Holland Grill Apex Model# BH421SS5
The Holland Grill is a truly unique gas grill. This model, the Apex, is the top line product from Holland. To understand how different this grill is let me tell you that it has 330 square inches of cooking space, a single 13,000 BTU burner, a completely isolated cooking chamber, and a pair of smoke stacks on top. People who have owned this grill over the past two decades are dedicated fans that refuse to switch to a more conventional gas grill. On the other hand I know people who have found its unique and versatile cooking system difficult to get used to. Either way, this is a very well built grill.
8. Vidalia Grill Model 628 Gas Grill
The Vidalia grill is unique amongst gas grills in that it is designed as a convection oven that allows you to not only grill directly of a high, intense heat (searing) but also to indirectly cook so that this unit can smoke, broil, bake, roast, and much more. This unit has a single 40,000 BTU stainless steel (304) burner. Air is drawn in under this burner when it then circulates through the direct grilling portion, across the indirect area, then down and out through the other side of the grill.
9. The Outdoor Greatroom Company Cook Number 36-Inch Stainless Steel
The Cook Number system on The Outdoor Greatroom Company grills is a unique way of grilling. The single burner can be moved from a cast iron sear plate in the back to the open grilling area in the front giving you the ability to quickly sear meats and then finish them off over an open grilling space. This reduces the cooking space but gives you a wide versatility of cooking abilities. The convection baffle below the grilling surface provides even heating and the temperature probe lets you know when food is done exactly to your liking. This unique grill takes a minute to figure out but offers a lot of grilling power.
10. Vermont Castings 4-Burner VCS422SSP
This is a heavy grill with heavy cast iron and stainless steel body parts. The 54,000 BTU output from four stainless steel burners is more than enough to heat the nearly 493 square inches of primary grilling area. Recently construction of the Vermont Castings grills has been moved from China to the United States. The materials used are excellent and the construction is definitely superior to the mass market grills. Look to spend around $1700USD for this gas grill. The side burner can be either a standard gas burner or infrared sear burner.
