Igloo 48,000 BTU 5-Burner Gas Grill from Wal-Mart

Igloo 48,000 BTU 5-Burner Gas Grill from Wal-Mart

North American Outdoors Inc.

The Bottom Line

This is another grill built to cash in on the popularity of stainless steel grills. Unfortunately, only a few parts of this grill (the lid and cooking grates) are made of quality stainless steel. While this unit had cast brass burners, individual ignitors, and a good BTU output, the construction is weak. In fact the lid fell off of one of the units I looked at. This grill isn't made by Igloo, it's imported under their name. It's only available at Wal-Mart stores.
Pros
  • Cast Brass Burners

Guide Review - Igloo 48,000-BTU 4-Burner Stainless Steel Gas Grill

This grill has been discontinued. Wal-Mart is currently not carrying gas grills under this brand name.

I'm really beginning to regret saying that stainless steel typically means quality all those years ago. This is yet another "all" stainless steel grill that is built with features to make people think its of good quality. This grill, sold exclusively through Wal-Mart has cast brass burners, individual ignitors and is completely constructed out of stainless steel. The very list of basic elements I used to believe made a great grill. Unfortunately, this grill relies on cheap 430 stainless steel for most of the body and internal components. This is the kind of stainless steel that discolors and rusts in a short period of time and the overall construction is weak. In fact, when I was looking at these grills I lifted the lid on one and it fell off.

This unit has a very good BTU output with 48,000 BTUs for it's 475 square inches of primary cooking space. Also a perfect score on my list. But the knobs are plastic as well as the mountings for the lid handle. The full length drip tray is a nice feature, but since it is made out of very thin 430 stainless steel, the grease and other stuff that drips onto it will cause it to corrode.

Lastly, this unit is another example of one of the big problems in modern grills. While it has the name Igloo stamped on the front (a name most people will recognize), this grill was manufactured and designed in China. Wal-Mart simply gave the Chinese the target price, and the basic features, and let them figure out how to deliver it for a profit.
