The Great Outdoor Room Company

The Bottom Line

The Cook Number system on the Fire Stone grills is a unique way of grilling. The single burner can be moved from a cast iron sear plate in the back to the open grilling area in the front giving you the ability to quickly and efficiently sear meats and then finish them off over an open grilling space. This reduces the cooking space but gives you a wide versatility of cooking abilities. The convection baffle below the grilling surface provides even heating and the temperature probe lets you know when food is done exactly to your liking. This unique grill takes a minute to figure out but offers a lot of grilling power.

Guide Review - Fire Stone Cook Number 24-inch Black Porcelain Gas Grill

The Outdoor Great Room company makes virtually everything you need to create and living space on your patio. From chairs and tables to firepits and grills, these products have been virtually reinvented to fit the needs for backyard living. The grills, like this 24 inch black porcelain unit have been completely rethought making a truly unique unit. The best way to explain how it works is to walk you through the grilling of a steak.

Start by moving the single, movable burner to the sear setting and preheating the grill. This puts the burner under a heavy, cast iron sear plate in the back of the grill. With the grill heated and the sear dial turned to high, put the steaks on the sear dial. After 90 seconds per side you switch the grill from sear to grill, insert the temperature probe and move the steaks to the open grill area. Adjust the Cook Number dial to your desired doneness (rare to well) and wait for the grill to beep.

Whether you need to sear the food or not, the grill is designed to be fool-proof and to tell you the truth, it is. It takes a little getting used to, but this grill gives you all the convenience of any modern appliance.

What you sacrifice for this is a limited grilling area for the size of the grill. Since the sear plate uses up a good portion of the primary grilling space you won't get the space you would without it. Of course if this system sounds right for you then this is a grill to consider.

The internal components of this grill are all 304 stainless steel and very durable. The body is porcelain coated steel and should be cared for to prevent the coating from scratching. There is an all stainless steel version of this grill if you want to spend the extra money for it. This grill typically runs around $1,200 to $1,400USD.
