There is no other barbecue competition like Memphis in May. In 2010 over 250 gathered to compete in this truly unique competition. the Memphis in May Barbecue Competition is really 4 competitions in one since each team can only compete in one of four categories. The pork shoulder, whole hog, and rib competitions come with the chance of winning the grand championship. Because there were so many teams, vendors, and exhibitors at the competition and because it is a full mile between the north and south gates I focused my attention on the pork shoulder competition.
In years past the weather has usually played a role at Memphis in May. This year was no exception. From the intense heat and humidity to a massive downpour the night before competition started, leaving the ground soaked and muddy, this was a year that kept you looking for shade and sunscreen.
This year first prize in the pork shoulder competition went to relative newcomer and BBQ Pitmasters star Tuffy stone.
