By , About.com Guide

There is no other event in the world of barbecue competition like the American Royal. This is not only the largest barbecue competition in the world, but the Grand Championship of the KCBS barbecue season. There are in fact two competitions here. The Invitational Competition is made up the best competitors the world. You have to have won a state or national championship to get the invitation and teams do whatever it takes to get that invite. The open competition this year was made up of over 500 teams from around the world trying for the coveted grand champion trophy. Since there has to be a judge for each team, this years competition brought over 500 certified barbecue judges to taste all that barbecue. Since each team has several members, and with vendors, fans, curious onlookers, staff, and media gather each year in Kansas City of this one event, it is the single largest gather in the barbecue world.
