Top 10 Barbecue Beans Recipes

The Most Popular and Best Barbecue Bean Recipes

By

From the Boston to California, barbecue is frequently served up next to a bowl or beans. Regardless of the type of beans, they make the perfect accompaniment to any kind of grilled or smoked meats. In fact, one of my favorite additions to beans is grilled or smoked meats. You will find that several of the recipes on this list call for Burnt Ends. These heavily smoked pieces of brisket are the perfect way to add flavor to any bean dish.

Beans of any type, whether dry or canned, should be given plenty of time to cook, low and slow. This lets the flavors blend.

1. Judy Mills's From-Scratch Baked Beans

"Judy wrote out the recipe for me" says Mike Mills, "and I've altered it using dried beans. The color will be lighter since you're starting with white beans, and the texture will be just a little firmer. You'll have to start a day early to soak the beans, but I guarantee the end result will be worth the extra time and effort."

2. Carolina Barbecue Beans

These Carolina Style Barbecue Beans combine cider vinegar and ketchup to give them that Southern barbecue flavor. While this BBQ bean recipe calls for a can of pork and beans as a base you can use additional lima and kidney beans with some smoked pork to give it a delicious flavor. This is perfect with pulled pork and the addition of some smoky barbecue bark makes it even better.

3. Boston Baked Beans

Boston Baked Beans
Regarding BBQ Inc.
There are probably a thousand recipes for Boston Baked Beans. This one is mine and I think a great place to start developing yours. I prefer the great northern beans and a very smoky bacon. These beans are sweet and savory, but not spicy hot.

4. Smoked Beans

To get that authentic smoked flavor into these barbecue beans, add pieces of smoked meat to it. I always try to save something back from any smoking I do so I have something to add to soups, beans, and more. Burnt ends are the perfect meat for these beans but any heavily smoked pieces of meat will work.

5. Kansas City Baked Beans

Kansas City Baked Beans
Regarding BBQ Inc.
These baked beans get their flavor from Brisket Burnt Ends. These are the extra smoky bits of a smoked brisket. Burnt Ends are a little tough on their own, but the perfect addition to beans. Give the burnt ends time to absorb some of the liquid in this recipe and release their great flavor.

6. Cowboy Beans

In Texas, beans mean Pinto Beans. These beans are cooked up with brisket burnt ends and barbecue sauce to make them the perfect side dish for barbecue brisket. If you don't have burnt ends try a grilled steak cooked well over a smoky fire or some smoky bacon. Either way, a good dose of smoke flavor is what these beans need to make them authentic.

7. Hot and Spicy Barbecue Beans

Hot and Spicy Beans
Regarding BBQ, Inc.
This is what it says it is, "hot and spicy." You can tone it down a bit by reducing the spicy ingredients if you must. This barbecue beans dish is a great side for beef brisket or pork ribs. One thing to remember, spicy intensifies with time, so the longer these beans cook the spicier they get.

8. Santa Maria Pinquito Beans

Santa Maria Pinquito Beans
Regarding BBQ, Inc.
Pinquito Beans are native to the Santa Maria Valley in Southern California. They are a cross between a small pink and a small white bean. The are available for purchase online or you can substitute pinto beans. These beans are the traditional side dish of Santa Maria Barbecue.

9. Easy Barbecue Beans

This barbecue beans recipe is simple and delicious. It is simmered for a long time in a slow cooker. You can add more or less hot sauce depending on how spicy you like it. While it is best to let these beans slow cook for several hours, they can be served up in less time. The flavors won't blend as much, but will still be great.

10. BBQ Beans

Bruce D. Cook sent me this great recipe for barbecue beans; the necessary side dish for any great cookout. This is an old style bean recipe with a taste of smoke and a rich sweetness.
