Kamado style grills, like the Big Green Egg, have become increasingly popular in recent years. The main reason for this is the versatility that these ceramic cookers offer. Capable of reaching extremely high temperatures or holding very low cooking temperatures, these units are the perfect combination of smoker and grill, but is there a way to improve on their simple design.
Recently I received the new Kamado Mate rotisserie accessory that fits all large sized, round kamado grills. This stainless steel ring fits between the body and the lid of the grill, making a space for a rotisserie unit. This keeps the airflow of the grill the same while suspending a rotisserie rod in the very center.
The question I think most people will ask, is why would anyone need a rotisserie system for a kamado style grill. I'm certain that many people do fine without any type of rotisserie system, but for those who like the benefits (i.e. even cooking, self basting, etc.) this product presents a viable option. I have tried it out and it works. It can be used at low smoking temperatures or at much higher grilling temperatures.
The Kamado Mate is in the early stages of marketing and is only available in limited supplies. I have liked below to a purchase point on Amazon where it is being sold for $299USD. There are more pictures and information there.
