Why do you cut back grilling or smoking in the winter?

By , About.com GuideSeptember 26, 2012

Follow me on:

The temperatures have started to dip and I know that while you and I are certainly not going to be deterred by the change in weather, there are those that will be packing up their grills and smokers for the winter. Of course, those of you in the warmer climates can brag all you want. Winter is real for many of us around the world and whether you pack it in for the next few months or keep grilling strong, the truth is that many of us cut back on our outdoor cooking. The obvious reason for this cut back in barbecue and grilling is due to the cold weather. However, I don't really think that explains it all. Perhaps, darker evenings, fewer gatherings, or just not thinking about it might result in the drop off. So this leads me to this weeks question:

POLL: Why do you cut back grilling or smoking in the winter?
1) I don't cut back
2) Too Cold
3) Too Dark
4) Just don't think about it
5) Don't have a reason to
6) Grill or Smoker packed away
7) Other (please specify in the Comments)

For me, grilling is a seasonal taste that says Summer and Football. Outside of those seasons, I guess I crave other things.

If barbecue reminds you of football then you should be grilling in the fall and winter since the football season is from October to February

Hard to maintain grill or smoker temperature if it gets cold outside.

Summer I cook outside to avoid heating the house. Winter I cook inside to help heat the house.

I’ll grill any time there isn’t snow on the deck keeping me from getting to the grill. Shoveling a path to the grill would be a deal breaker for me. I do deep fry turkeys in winter, but do it carefully in our garage, with the door cracked- and I don’t leave while the burner is on!

I am a historical reenactor, we cook out doors allyear round… I have built a firepit in my backyard to use when the weather is too ” frightfull” to use a modern grill! We have cooked outside in blizzards, smoked meats and nuts when the temps have been in the single digits and have loved every minute of it!
We just don’t comprehend why others don’t find enjoyment in doing this !

Weather permitting and often it is I do grill in the winter – but I have developed a wonderful Oven BBQ recipe using my Winter BBQ RUB -> bbqrub.us/about-winter-bbq.htm

We use country ribs for the oven bbq and cook em all day at 200f serve with yams! Man o’ Man!

I used to grill all winter long when I had a grill that was “hardwired” to the house natural gas. Now that I can only have a propane tank, winter grilling is not really an option, and I really don’t like the idea of having a propane tank in the house. I do get out the smoker on a nice February day when I am in the mood for ribs!

(17) Bruce says:

I don’t cut back. I’m just out there in parka and hat and gloves and watching the winter sky. My beer sometimes gets frozen slushy though.

My biggest problem is getting the grill hot enough on very cold evenings. Sometimes I have the burners going full blast and it still barely gets past medium.

Cut back on grilling or smoking? No, I live in California! Winter just means I’m watching football instead of baseball while the meat is cooking.

I’ve cooked in all weather… and I’d much rather cook outside on a calm 20-30 degree day than a windy day at 70-80 degrees.

BBQ Season never ends!
