Sear Plates or Briquets

" have seen both types on a variety of grills and I have tried to read as much as I could about the differences. Flavor seems to be a tossup but the steel needs to be replaced more frequently than the ceramic? Is this true? Also does the shape of the ceramic mean anything other than a design choice?"
