BBQ Pit

"I've got this idea to make a BBQ pit for the backyard for wood/charcoal use. I would also like to incorporate into the design the ability to insert a prefabricated gas burner assembly for those times when gas would be more convenient. And as a third feature, I'd like to be able to open the sides to make sort of a 4 sided open fireplace. Am I asking too much from one thing? I'm concerned that the "one size fits all" approach will end up with nothing working exactly right."
