Sunshine Grill

"Just got a Sunshine grill, 4 burner, lu4000 I believe, comes with hood and trolley, split cooking surface- gas grill on half and the other half like a griddle. Seems to be an 'Aussey" grill?? Has any one had any experience with these, or any suggestions. It's the 4th grill/smoker on the deck and the good wife is making noise about something needing to go. Thanks. (have really enjoyed and learned from all the posts on here, great site)"

I have 2 units. They are great once they get going, but take a long time to heat up in Canadian weather. Also, the cast iron burners and flame tamer plate rusts like hell. I have huge chunks/flakes of rust falling off every year, and the materials are thinning because of this. I did oil all parts prior to using it, but is does no good. I believe that you have to store these units inside because any prolonged inactivity causes rust.

It seems from a document I found on the Internet, called:

Avatar Industries Limited
ABN 68 008 742 390
Annual Report 30 June 2005

that Sunshine Grills has gone out of business.

Too bad!

I have a Legend 4 which was GREAT for the first year that I had it.

Then slowly it seemed to not heat as much as it used to, even with a full and new tank. A few times, I could barely get it to get lukewarm!

After a year of putting up with a slow degradation, I consulted a specialty BBQ store. On their recommendation, I bought a new regulator and hose. That didn’t seem to help any.

I have removed and cleaned the cast-iron burners, inside and out, several times. They seem free and clear of any debris or spider webs, or even rust clogging the little holes.

Still, the BBQ does not ever heat above 300F – even with the hood closed.

There is one part I haven’t touched – the square pipe with the control knobs and nozzles attached. I doubt anything can get in those little nozzle holes, though. I can’t get anything in that pipe to clean it out. I will say, though, that sometimes the control knobs stick or turn in complete circles with no stop.

I did like my BBQ at first, and it was quite the showpiece to all our friends that came over. Now, I hardly ever BBQ because it barely cooks – and I surely can’t trust it to handle food for multiple people.

I have the legend 4 and have had it for about 5 years. This is a true bbq as the grills are close to the heat. No baking here! Steaks are the best on this unit.
Cast iron grills and burners are the only way to go and I am still on my first set. Though they do need to be cleaned and rescaled. If they had been stainless I would have gone threw a set a year here in Canada. (High heats cook the stainless qualities right out of the metal). All in all a good unit,
The down side would be no rotisserie for the lazy types. and that the factory/parts support is almost non existant.

I have had my Legend 4 for almost 10 years and I’m also in desperate need of replacement parts. All I’ve been able to find is a number 1800 526 4720.

I found an online grill accessaries store that stocks and sells burners, Grill grates and griddles. The manufacturer has a web site at sunshinegrills.com where you can get information on the care and repair of your grill. There are links to get to the parts store mentioned above.

I bought a Legend 4000 but my wooden trolley set did not come with an instruction manual. I just can’t figure out how to assemble it. Does anyone have a copy of the manual? Tried to get it from the manufacturer’s website but there’s no diagram!

Caroline, You should be able to find the manual at Sunshine Grills.

I have a sunshine 4 burner that is 7 years old and about shot. All the problems/complaints listed here are quite accurate. I am junking it but do have some new and used parts that I will furnish to any interested party.

I may be interested in those parts.

I am a Chef and have absolutely cherished my Sunshine Grill. The comments, however, do seem quite accurate. I too would be interested in the parts you have. I’ve been waiting to purchase the latest model with additional wood trim etc. and am heartbroken to learn that it may be too late. I especially love, and can no longer be happy without, the 300 cubic inch flat top!

I have a Sunshine Legend 5 (I believe) grill that is in fairly good shape. I believe it needs a burner but the body, grates and stand are in good condition. It’s been kept covered and in the garage for a number of years. Does anyone know a venue for selling it? Thanks

can anyone tell me where to get replacement parts for the sunshine lu4 in the new york tri state area? I found a place in Fl. but shipping is crazy. Email me at caddi123@yahoo.com

(18) Susan says:

If your looking for parts for the sunshine lu4 grill as I am, Allaboutgrills.com has some. The only problem is their shipping is almost double the actual cost of using UPS! Jerry was very helpful ofering to let me schedule a pick up through UPS but the Mgr said she was unable to give me the internet price because of some “BS” reason, so I was right back to paying too much. Guess they don’t need the business.

(20) KathyMcC says:

They’ve gone out of business!!?? Yikes! I’ve had a Legend 4 for almost 10 years and love it! Over the years we’ve replaced the flame-tamers and the grill tops; early on we also purchased the wok addition, which is fantastic – the best way to get high-heat under a wok. But alas, the gas jet-things have finally deteriorated and I was hoping to buy a new unit altogether.
It seems that all of the other grills out there have grates with that sit too high up, and have ‘rungs’ that are too far apart so food falls through them. Any other suggestions for replacing this great unit?

(21) Juston says:

I have a Legend 4 not being used and not in the best of shape. However it is complete and I’m sure it’s useful for parts. Free for the taking, must be picked up. Windsor, Ontario, Canada area.
